Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre - Review

Her name was Lola... she was a show girl...

Kinky Boots tells the story of a failing Shoe Factory in the North of England (Price & Son). When the owner passes away, he leaves the factory in the hands of his son Charlie who has to find a way to turn its fortunes around or face firing all his staff, many of which are his childhood friends. 

With the factories future hanging in the balance Charlie has a chance encounter with Lola, a flamboyant drag queen cabaret singer *lightbulb moment* - Charlie can save the factory... with Lola's help to create a line of footwear for drag queens - kinky boots!

Of course the idea of creating Kinky Boots for men isn't an idea which all the factory workers love - especially some of the burley Northern men. Don in particular had a real issue with Lola, but as the plot developed they begin to understand each other and develop a mutual respect.

The choreography was insane - I was so impressed with how much energy the cast had, especially for a midweek matinee performance. The costumes were glitzy, bold and completely OTT - think Strictly Come Dancing on Steroids.

I thoroughly enjoyed this production, the only negative thing I'd say is that the songs aren't memorable - I wasn't singing them on my way home like I would be with other productions. However, the acting was fantastic, and the whole production was impeccable (and very sparkly).
